Asymmetric invariants for a class of strictly hyperbolic systems including the Timoshenko beam

We introduce a set of conserved quantities of energy‐type for a strictly hyperbolic system of two coupled wave equations in one space dimension. The system is subject to mechanical boundary conditions. Some of these invariants are asymmetric in the sense that their defining quadratic form contains second order derivatives in only one of the unknowns. We study their independence with respect to the usual energies and characterize their sign. In many cases, our results provide sharp well‐posedness and stability results. Finally, we apply some of our conservation laws to the study of a singular perturbation problem previously considered by J. Lagnese and J. L. Lions. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A NUMERICALLY STABLE BLOCK MODIFIED GRAM-SCHMIDT ALGORITHM FOR SOLVING STIFF WEIGHTED LEAST SQUARES PROBLEMS

Recently, Wei in proved that perturbed stiff weighted pseudoinverses and stiff weighted least squares problems are stable, if and only if the original and perturbed coefficient matrices A and A^- satisfy several row rank preservation conditions. According to these conditions, in this paper we show that in general, ordinary modified Gram-Schmidt with column pivoting is not numerically stable for solving the stiff weighted least squares problem. We then propose a row block modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm with column pivoting, and show that with appropriately chosen tolerance, this algorithm can correctly determine the numerical ranks of these row partitioned sub-matrices, and the computed QR factor R^- contains small roundoff error which is row stable. Several numerical experiments are also provided to compare the results of the ordinary Modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm with column pivoting and the row block Modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm with column pivoting.     

Stability control of the electrooptic effect with new maleimide copolymers containing photoreactive tricyanopyrrolidene‐based chromophores

New photocrosslinkable maleimide copolymers have been synthesized by the attachment of a tricyanopyrrolidene‐based chromophore. The 2‐(3‐cyano‐4‐(2‐{4‐[hexyl‐(6‐hydroxy‐hexyl)‐amino]‐phenyl}‐vinyl)‐5‐oxo‐1‐{4‐[4‐(3‐oxo‐3‐phenyl‐propenyl)‐ phenoxy]‐butyl}‐1,5‐dihydro‐pyrrol‐2‐ylidene)‐malononitrile chromophore exhibits nonlinear optical activity and contains a chalcone moiety that is sensitive to UV light (λ = 330–360 nm) for crosslink formation. The maleimide monomers have also been functionalized with chalcone moieties. The resultant copolymers exhibit great processability, and one of them shows a maximum electrooptic coefficient of 90 pm/V at 1300 nm. We could control the thermal stability of the electrooptic coefficient with the newly synthesized photoreactive copolymers successfully. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We give a short proof of a generalization of the Rolewicz theorem based on the uniform boundedness principle.

     

On the stability of some integer programming algorithms

In the present paper we develop our approach for studying the stability of integer programming problems. We prove that the L-class enumeration method is stable on integer linear programming problems in the case of bounded relaxation sets [9]. The stability of some cutting plane algorithms is discussed.

Mode beating in spot-size converter lasers

An anomalous modulation in the wavelength spectrum has been observed in lasers with spot-size converters. This intensity modulation is shown to be caused by beating between the fundamental lasing mode and radiation modes in the taper. This results in a periodic modulation in the net gain spectrum, which causes wavelength jumps between adjacent net gain maxima, and a drive current dependent spectral width that is expected to affect system performance. The amplitude of this spectral modulation is reduced significantly by either using an angled rear-facet which reflects the beating radiation modes away from the laser axis, or by using a nonlinear, adiabatic taper.     

阴极还原处理对多孔硅发光性能的影响

对经过阴极还原处理后的多孔硅样片进行了光致发光测试和稳定性测试.实验结果表明这种处理能明显改善多孔硅的发光稳定性,使其表面结构更加稳定.利用原子力显微镜对不同还原时间的多孔硅微结构及形貌进行了比较,在一定范围内随着还原时间的增长多孔硅表面粗糙度增大,PL谱增强.
